Community names first: “Volcanic Whale,” “Magma Whale,” and “whale 2nd phase” all mean the same fight — the boss health bar in-game reads Mutated Bowhead Whale. The phase-1 whale you catch shows the kill text Bowhead Whale. This page covers where the boss is and how to trigger it.
The Location: Volcano Island
The whale chain lives on Volcano Island — the fifth and last island, shown as the purple marker on your radar. You unlock it by finishing the Giant Bird quest on Island 4 (the casino island) and taking its coordinates flash drive.
The island hosts a military camp with a soldier vendor and the Scientist in the yellow hazmat suit — she’s the quest giver. The volcano’s slopes have flowing lava streams that set you on fire if you stand close (Foot Snails gather around them, and per player reports they count toward the bait hand-in).
The Two-Stage Trigger
The boss never swims around waiting to be found. The Scientist’s chain works like this:
Stage 1 — the Bowhead Whale. Buy Scientific Lures from the camp vendor, catch small “scientific” fish, and hand them to the Scientist until she makes you whale bait. Fish it up, kill it, and keep the body — it’s a quest item and cannot be sold (it displays a price anyway; the walkthrough runner called that a bug).
Stage 2 — the eruption. Carry the whale’s body up the volcano path and throw it into the crater at the top — it doesn’t fit the small lava streams on the slopes. The Magma Whale erupts out, and the fight happens around the volcano: the walkthrough runner reported it despawns if you drive away in your boat.
Gear Up First
This is the hardest DPS check in the game. The reference run farmed Goblin Sharks (summoned with the Scientific Boss Lure, roughly $10,000 each) to afford the camp’s Assault Rifle (about $20,000 in that run) plus damage upgrades. Both whales dive-bomb and roll; the Magma Whale adds magma projectiles, and players report its landing attack can one-shot a full-health solo player. Don’t fight from the boat — the whale lands on it.
One community cheese worth knowing: a Steam thread describes slowly luring the Magma Whale back to Island 4’s casino and wedging it between the pillars — that’s also how the walkthrough finished the bare-hands “Handyman” achievement. Note the tension with the despawn behavior: fast boat escapes reportedly despawn it, while a slow lure kept aggro. Both are player reports, not hard rules.
Step by Step
- Finish the Giant Bird quest on Island 4 and take the coordinates flash drive.
- Sail to the purple radar dot; talk to the soldier vendor and the Scientist.
- Buy Scientific Lures, catch scientific fish (plus Foot Snails near the lava), and hand them in until you get whale bait.
- Farm Goblin Sharks to afford the Assault Rifle and upgrades before attempting the fight.
- Hook and kill the Bowhead Whale. Stock healing food — its dive-bombs hit very hard.
- Pick up the body (quest item, unsellable) and carry it to the crater rim.
- Throw it in. The Magma Whale erupts.
- Fight it around the volcano — don’t speed off or it may despawn.
- Return to the Scientist to finish the mission.
Common Mistakes
- Searching open water for the whale. It’s bait-summoned through the quest chain.
- Trying to sell the dead whale. Quest item; the displayed price is misleading.
- Throwing the body into the slope lava streams. Crater only.
- Driving away mid-fight. Players report a full despawn, costing you another whale.
- Fighting from the boat. It’s not cover; it’s a landing pad.
- Catching fire while gathering snails — watch your health near the lava.

Defeating the Volcanic Whale completes the Scientist’s research mission. She unlocks the expedition boat to the mainland — boarding it finishes the game. Two chase achievements hang on this fight: Handyman (final blow with bare hands) and Bean (beat the whole game within an hour).
