The gate off the starting island in How to Fish is a quest, not a money or fish-count threshold. If you feel stuck with no way off, you almost certainly haven’t finished the fisherman’s beer errand — the boss literally cannot be summoned without it.
The Fisherman’s Quest
The fisherman says a “long-legged creature” has been stealing his beer, and that it can be rage-baited with an empty beer can. Kill it and he trades you his boat.
The catch: you can’t just buy a beer and cast it. Buy a full beer from the shop and hand it to the fisherman — he empties it and gives you the can back as usable bait. If you’re short on cash, he suggests it himself: catch and sell crabs with the crab fishing rod.
Beating the Spider Crab
Bait your rod with the empty can and cast near the lighthouse to summon the Spider Crab. The whole fight is one rhythm:
- It dive-bombs at you in a straight lunge.
- Dodge the lunge — it stuns itself on landing.
- Hit it during the stun window, then back off and repeat.
Early melee is enough: a sharpened knife or brass knuckles will do it. The walkthrough runner failed with unprepared gear, sharpened his knife at the shop bench, and won the next attempt.
The Hand-In (Where Most Players Get Stuck)
The boss drops meat chunks and a shell. The meat chunks are just food/money. Inspect the shell — it’s marked as a quest item.
Give the SHELL to the fisherman. He responds with the boat keys and a tip: “Remember to use the radar when looking for new islands.”
Step by Step
- Finish the tutorial: eat clams, sell clams, buy the crab fishing rod.
- Sell crabs until you can afford a beer plus some early gear (knife or brass knuckles).
- Talk to the fisherman to activate the quest.
- Buy a beer, hand it to him, take back the empty can.
- Sharpen your knife at the shop bench (recommended).
- Cast the empty can near the lighthouse to summon the Spider Crab.
- Dodge the dive-bombs, attack during each self-stun, repeat until it dies.
- Pick up all drops. Sell the meat chunks, keep the shell.
- Give the shell to the fisherman for the boat keys.
- Buy the radar — it’s a separate $10 purchase at the shop, easy to skip.
- Follow the radar blip across open water to Island 2. The crossing is rough; if you fall out, you can climb back in.
Common Mistakes
- Handing over meat chunks instead of the shell. The quest only advances with the shell.
- Fighting the crab head-on instead of waiting for the self-stun after each dive-bomb.
- Leaving without the radar. It’s not included with the boat.
- Selling or eating the shell before the hand-in.

What Happens Next
Island 2 is the leech and piranha island. The local NPC immediately gives the next quest chain: collect leeches, get them turned into bait, and kill the Giant Piranha for the Island 3 coordinates.
