Killed the Pufferfish, offered the drops to the Tourist, nothing happened? The quest isn’t bugged — he just wants one specific item, and it’s not the meat.
What the Boss Actually Drops
The Pufferfish drops two kinds of items:
- Several ordinary meat chunks — food or money, nothing else. Sell them freely.
- One visually distinct piece — its in-game name is the Pufferfish Fin. It’s the “half piece of fish with a bone sticking out” from the pinned Steam answer; players usually call it the tail.
This trophy-versus-meat rule is a pattern across every boss in the game: the Spider Crab’s shell, the Giant Piranha’s “Big Yummy Fish,” the Pufferfish’s tail. The kill alone never advances progression — the odd-shaped drop does.
Step by Step
- Kill the Pufferfish (boss guide here).
- Before touching anything else, scan the drop pile for the piece with the exposed bone.
- Pick it up and confirm it’s in your inventory. In co-op, note which player holds it.
- Sell or eat the plain meat chunks — they have no quest use.
- Hand the tail to the Tourist sitting by the tree.
- Take the flash drive with the Island 4 coordinates. Quest complete.
Common Mistakes
- Offering meat chunks and concluding it’s bugged. This is the single most common confusion — the whole Steam thread exists because of it.
- Leaving the area without the tail. If the Tourist won’t react, check your inventory, then search the beach around where the boss died.
- Bulk-selling every drop right after the fight — make sure the tail isn’t in the sale.
- Co-op hand-ins: players have reported confusion when the trophy sits in a teammate’s inventory; have the carrier do the hand-in.
- If the tail is truly gone, no confirmed recovery exists other than summoning the boss again — which costs another Carrot.

The flash drive unlocks Island 4 — the casino and Giant Bird island. Consider the Island 3 boat radar upgrade so the new coordinates are easy to follow. Full checklist in What to Do After the Pufferfish.
